Ship Speak

Sgt. Maj. Scott T. Pile speaks to Marines with 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and sailors embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island parked pierside at Naval Base San Diego Aug. 9. The unit's sergeant major spoke to the service members as the ship prepared to train with the Navy's Amphibious Squadron Five Aug. 10-22. The Makin Island sailed from the port city for the first time with its full complement of Marines - more than 1,000 men and women from West Coast Marine Corps installations. (Photo by Gunnery Sgt. Mr. Vice

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden speaks to Marines, sailors and their families at Hangar 105 at Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii Aug. 25. More than 1,000 spectators gathered to hear Biden'€™s address. "€œI wish everyone'€™s wives, sons and daughters were here, because America owes them,"€ Biden said. "€œIn all of history, no generation of families has had to deal with repeated deployments such as you have."€ After his remarks to the troops, Biden took time to shake hands and pose for photographs with each person who came forward to meet him. The vice president stopped in Hawaii after a nine-day trip to Asia where he met with key leaders there to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues, according to the White House. During his one-and-a-half day stay here, Biden visited children at the new base Youth Center and played golf at the Klipper Golf Course. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Jacob D. Barber)

Getting a Leg Up

Sgt. Jason Pacheco, 23, scout sniper instructor, Division Schools, 1st Marine Division, from Las Vegas, N.M., uses his prosthetic leg as support for an M40 Sniper Rifle on a firing range at Camp Pendleton Aug. 30. Pacheco suffered a severed leg after an improvised explosive device detonated beneath him during a patrol in Afghanistan August 2010. His leg had to be amputated below his knee. Pacheco uses his prosthetic leg to support the weight of his rifle to show an example of how students can use anything to steady a rifle. He has been an instructor for the Pre-Scout Sniper School since March and recently completed a physical fitness test with his prosthetic leg. He has re-enlisted and said he hopes to continue training in preparation to return to full duty. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Timothy Lenzo)
